Medicine Buddha Sadhana 6

NAMO MAHA BHAISHAJI YE.

For this practice, set up a painting of Menla and in front of it peaceful offerings, such as mandala. By doing so, you will gather the accumulations. Otherwise, visualize the front generation in the sky. As it is sufficient for the offerings to be mentally emanated, nothing is necessary. As this is the annuttara tradition, the practitioner need not abstain from meat and liquor, nor engage in ritual cleansing such as ablution and the use of water. However, the empowerment transmission must have been received, since this is the annuttara tradition of secret mantra. As the simultaneous generation of the self and front is the Nyingma tradition, they need not be done separately. As this is a Nyingma liturgical practice, meditate on the meaning of the words.

Medicine Buddha Sadhana 7

beings be freed from sickness and achieve Menla's state. Although in the sutra ritual the ablution occurs at the beginning, there is no contradiction in it occurring here at the end, since that is done in annuttarayogatantra. The benefits of commitment to this practice are: if you are monastic, your discipline will be unbroken. If it is broken, the obscuration of that will be purified. You will not fall to inferiour states. All the karma that would cause birth in hell, as a preta, or as animal will be purified and you will not be born in those states. If you are born in them you will be immediately freed, will be born in the best of superior states, and will gradually attain buddhahood. In this,

Medicine Buddha Sadhana 17

you will easily acquire food and clothing. Harm from sickness, sprits, curses and persecution by kings will be pacified. You will be protected by Vajrapani, Brahma, Indra, the four great kings, the twelve yaksha chieftains, and the seven thousand servants of each of the chieftains. You will be freed from the eigtheen types of untimely death and from harm from enemies and predators. Your wishes will be completely fulfilled. These and other, inconceivably great benefits are stated in the two sutras of Menla. The monks of Jang Damring Palkhor Chode and other great monastic colleges, who see faults in most dharma and are hard to please, only use Menla in the service of the living

Medicine Buddha Sadhana 18

and for the purification of the dead. The Menla rituals is observed in front of the Jowo in Lhasa (the Vajrasana of Tibet) and in front of the image of awakening at Samye. Since in all oral and treasure teachings of the new and old traditions of sutra and mantra there is nothing more beneficial than the ritual of Menla, have confidence in it. There are many larger and shorter forms of it, but this one has few words and yet contains the meaning. Because it is of the annuttara tradition, ritual cleanliness is not required. Because the offerings are mentally emanated, it can be done without tormas or other offerings. Therefore, may everyone practice it.

Translation by Lama Yeshe Gyamtso and Michael Erlewine.
